Development means a lot of things to many different people. There are plenty of technical definitions of development, however, to understand what it truly means, take some time to reflect on the concept. Some words that come to my mind when I think of development are: growth, learning, and advancement. It's all about continuous improvement — whether its personal or professional growth, learning something about yourself (and learning from others), or advancing and moving your life forward.
So.. why? Why is development important? Why does it matter? The better question to ask yourself is: if you don’t focus on your development, what is it exactly that you are doing? Are you really making the best use of your time? While there are countless reasons why development matters, here is our list of top 3 reasons why it should be a priority:
- To better yourself — Isn’t this something everyone would like to do? Creating better versions of ourselves not only helps us in our own lives, but it has an impact on those around us, too. If everyone around you has goals, inspirations, hopes, and dreams - that is contagious. Be that person who influences others.
- To move forward — The worst thing anyone could do in life is settle… for anything. Being stagnant will get you nowhere. There will always be difficult times and obstacles that get in the way of what we want, but it’s important to never lose sight of what you’re working for, regardless of what gets in the way. The key is to learn how to jump through those hurdles and come out on top.
- To find your purpose — Everyone wants to find their purpose in life. How else will you do this if you’re not moving forward and developing yourself? One thing is certain - it won’t find you on it’s own - you have to look for it. Don’t be satisfied with anything that is mediocre - strive to find who it is that you were meant to be. You owe it to yourself, and to those around you.
